Description

Enchanted Rock offers a tremendous adventure for beginning backpacking.  Trips can be open to scouts of all ages.  Because of the distance from Houston, troops can arrive after dark and complete a moonlight trek back to one of the primitive camping areas.  Remember to check the lunar calendar to make sure there will be some moonlight to help see the trail.  The trail does have reflector markers and is fairly easy to follow if you have a map.  When hiking at night, have the leader in front stop every once in a while and count everybody as they go by.  If other primitive sites in the park are empty, or if you get there and reserve the sites first, it is possible to get up the next morning practice breaking camp, pack up and move to one of the other primitive sites in the park.  The primitive areas are all about 2 mile hikes.
